Assess

At PhysioSpace we aim to meet your diagnostic needs using a tailored and comprehensive clinical assessment process. Our experienced chartered Physiotherapists will utilise the assessment time effectively to understand not only your condition but you as a person and how the condition is affecting you. Our patients are fully at the centre of our care model and this concept underpins our mission here at PhysioSpace.

Diagnose

It is our mission for patients to be provided with an understanding of their condition based on evidence-based practice and a credible clinical reasoning process. It is at this point that we pave the way forward for your recovery to maximise your function and meet your goals. You sit at the centre of the care model at PhysioSpace; we are dedicated to your needs and we will tailor your treatment plan to these using services within and referral outside of the PhysioSpace model of care where appropriate.

We strive to adopt not only recovery but injury and relapse prevention empowering you to become self sufficient in the long-term reducing your demand for healthcare. We use data to measure progress and track improvement in function. Our individualised programming service is an essential component of facilitating sustained performance.

Pre and Post-Op Physiotherapy

There are very few orthopaedic procedures/operations which wouldn’t benefit from physiotherapy input both pre and post op. It is essential to go into any surgical procedure in the best possible physical condition so that you come out the other side ready to start the rehabilitation process.

In the case of a total knee replacement, pre-operatively you must get as fit, from a cardiovascular point of view and as strong, from a muscular point of view as possible as both of these will inevitably deteriorate post op.

In hospital you’ll be provided with simple exercises to minimise complications such as infection or DVT’s. You should also be prescribed some early strengthening or range of motion exercises. Once you are discharged, you’ll commonly require re-assessment and checking of your progress. Post-orthopaedic surgery, you’ll almost certainly require exercise progression to fully regain your strength, flexibility and function. The quickest, safest and easiest way to return to your day to day activities is by consulting a physiotherapist experienced in post-operative rehabilitation.

At PhysioSpace we’ll happily assist you in your post-operative care. We are familiar with the treatment protocols prescribed by most Orthopaedic Surgeons in Cardiff and Vale. We’ll happily liaise with your surgeon to determine any specific requirements based on your individual surgery.

What Treatments Will Physiotherapists Recommend?

Following a detailed initial assessment and examination, a physiotherapist is likely to recommend one of the following methods of treatment.

Education and Advice
General advice about activity and lifestyle often plays a major part in making sure that issues do not recur. A physiotherapist may recommend simple things like taking regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight, along with improvements to your posture and lifting technique.

Exercises
For some conditions, a physiotherapist will suggest a programme of exercise. This may include whole body exercises like swimming or walking, especially when you are recovering from an operation, or need to restore general mobility. Exercises carried out in warm water (hydrotherapy) can also be recommended to help with this kind of issue. Most often, the physiotherapist will prescribe a programme of exercises designed to strengthen and/or increase mobility in a specific area. This will be particularly common in relation to muscular or joint problems, and the exercises will normally need to be done for a period of weeks in order to take full effect. Sometimes, the exercises will be designed to be carried out indefinitely to ensure a sustained benefit.

Manipulation and Massage
These types of manual therapy can help to ease pain or stiffness, enhance mobility, improve circulation, and even help you to relax. Physiotherapists are highly trained in such techniques, and will often employ them to ease your symptoms or help your recovery.

Other Treatments
Our Physiotherapists are able to K-tape and strap to provide support for a painful area, allowing normal activity to be resumed more quickly and pain to be reduced. We also offer acupuncture for our clients in order to ensure that they have access to everything they can to aid recovery.
