Pre & Post Operative Physiotherapy

Sep 19, 2022

There are very few, if any orthopaedic procedures or operations which wouldn’t benefit from physiotherapy input both pre and post op. It is essential to go into any surgical procedure, having completed your “Pre-hab” in the best possible physical condition so that you come out the other side ready to start the rehab process.

In the case of a total knee replacement, pre operatively you must get as fit and strong, from both a cardiovascular and lower limb strength point of view as possible. The reason for this is that physical condition will inevitably deteriorate post op.

In hospital you’ll be provided with simple exercises and advice to minimise complications such as infection or DVT’s. You should also be prescribed some early strengthening or range of motion exercises. Once you are discharged, you’ll commonly require re-assessment and regular check ups to monitor your progress. Post-orthopaedic surgery, you’ll almost certainly require exercise progression to fully regain your strength, flexibility and function. The quickest, safest and easiest way to return to your day to day activities is by consulting a physiotherapist experienced in post-operative rehabilitation.

We are happy to see clients both before and after planned orthopaedic procedures (such as joint replacements and arthroscopies) and following trauma surgery (including a fracture, dislocation or ligament rupture).

Examples of the clients we see at PhysioSpace:

Knee – joint replacement, arthroscopy, ligament or tendon repair

Hip – joint replacement, arthroscopy

Shoulder – Following fractures, joint replacement, tendon or ligament repair, acromioclavicular joint surgery, decompression, following dislocation repair

Spinal – discectomy, stabilisation, fusion and root block injection

Ankle – joint replacement, arthroscopy, fracture management

Foot – bunion or toe surgery, fracture management

At PhysioSpace we’ll happily assist you in your post-operative care. We are familiar with the treatment protocols prescribed by most Orthopapedic Surgeons in Cardiff and Vale. We’ll happily liaise with your surgeon to determine any specific requirements based on your individual surgery.
